hen OpenAI's ChatGPT entered the scene in late 2022, it caused an uproar on social media. Many believed this chatbot was a more effective search engine than Google due to its articulate speaking style and timely answers. Some schools are planning to ban ChatGPT  from their premises, citing concerns about its automated responses.

Despite these worries, ChatGPT has managed to become a mainstay in many people's daily conversations. The chatbot is regularly used for customer service inquiries and other everyday tasks.

I have collated my research on ChatGPT here. This report will explain the basics of how ChatGPT works, its advantages, and some potential drawbacks. It will also cover the impact this chatbot has had on society, both good and bad.

ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm developed by OpenAI that can generate human-like conversation without any training. The chatbot's ability to adapt to new contexts, understand human language, and provide contextually relevant responses makes it a powerful tool for communication.

ChatGPT is powered by GPT-3 technology, which stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. This algorithm was developed using the latest advancements in deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI). The GPT-3 algorithm is able to generate human-like conversation by learning from billions of words of text.

There are some questions going around with regards to how students will be using Chat GPT . Some educators are concerned that students may take advantage of the chatbot's capabilities and use it to cheat on tests or assignments. I have answered these questions in the following section.

1. Will AI disrupt education?

  4. Administrative tasks: AI can be used to automate administrative tasks such as scheduling, record keeping, and communication, freeing educators to focus on teaching and learning.

Overall, the extent to which AI will disrupt education will depend on how it is implemented and used. Some educators are excited about the potential for AI to improve education, while others are concerned about the potential for it to displace human teachers and fundamentally change the nature of education.

2. Will Chat GPT encourage students to copy essays?

It is possible that chatbots or other language processing tools that use GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) technology could be used by students to generate copied or plagiarized essays. This could be especially likely if the chatbot can generate essays or other written work that is indistinguishable from work produced by a human.

However, it is important to note that using GPT or any other tool to generate copied or plagiarized work is unethical and generally not acceptable in academic settings. Students who engage in this type of behavior are likely to face consequences such as failing grades, academic probation, or even expulsion.

Ultimately, the responsibility for avoiding plagiarism and producing original work lies with the student. It is important for students to understand the importance of academic integrity and to be aware of the consequences of engaging in unethical behavior.

This means that students need a lesson on academic integrity and ethics which should be part of the curriculum.

Learning about ethics and academic integrity can help students to understand the importance of these principles and to develop the skills and habits that are necessary to adhere to them. This can include learning about proper citation practices, avoiding plagiarism, and understanding the consequences of engaging in unethical behavior.

We can’t revert to paper and pen tasks because we worry about this technology and how kids will cheat; especially since for many students technology is an essential way for them to demonstrate their learning and reach their full potential. It’s also pointless to ban or block the technology because it exists! I for one plan to talk to my students about the affordances as well as the limitations of AI and continue to have conversations with teachers about the capabilities of the tool as well as how we might change our teaching and assessment knowing this technology exists.- by Jennifer Casa-Todd
